Antioxidants are powerful, plant-derived compounds that help the body to slow or ward off free radicals. These offenders cause cell damage and have been linked to serious diseases like stroke, cancer, heart disease, auto-immune disease, etc. You are exposed to free radicals through environmental pollution as well as through normal biochemical reactions that occur in the body through digestion of food or medicine.
Antioxidants are mainly found in brightly colored fruits and vegetables like berries, sweet potato, kale and beets, but they can also be found in nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, coffee beans, cocoa powder (or dark chocolate) and red wine. These recipes contain 1 or more major ingredient known to be a rich source of antioxidants.
